Should We Expect Less?

Damn it! I promised I would say off the internet for the rest of the night b/c I have papers to grade for tomorrow (end of the semester). While grading self-evaluations from our last project I came across a comment I've never seen before.

I ask them, "Explain three ways that the teacher could make this a better group project." One of my students that is maintains a mid to high A replied, "Expect less."

WTF!!! If the "good" students are telling teachers to expect less - what is happening with the new generations?!!? As a teacher, I have high expectations and push my students to reach them. How else are we going to help them grow and work towards new ideas and better solutions? I am proud to be a tough teacher that loves her students enough to make them work and I will not expect less to make the students happy.

Wait until she sees my final exam tomorrow - hehehehehe!

P.S. I teach Communication Applications - a one-semester, public speaking course that is required by The State of Texas to graduate. It is not that hard, as long as they try.

I'm with you on this one. But, isn't this all part of the "I'm a victim" , "no accountability" and "everybody wins" mindset that's been promoted for several decades now?

Kudos to you - you've got a tough job!

We are dumbing down the system way too much. This crap about the emotional stability of children and if they get a failing grade, how it will affect their self esteem. It's called earning what you get and real life doesn't care if you fail. *stepping off soap box*

I am with you on this one - they have to learn that they are accountable - otherwise they will end up working at the place where the customers have to settle for less (no offense to anyone who works there - you have my deepest sympathies). There are somethings that need to know before they go to college - otherwise they will be behind for the rest of their lives....

Expect Less? NEVER! You are so right. We NEED teachers like you to ready our youth for their futures. You stick to your guns. They'll thank you later.

BUT, I'm all kinds of glad I'm not in your class, LOL!!
